The Irish Waterways

The first piece of advice we offer people when choosing a route for their hire boat holiday is not to worry about it too much - Ireland is a small country and the landscape along the river doesn't change greatly from Lough Erne to Lough Derg. The route you choose can depend on the boat hire marina you start from. There are subtle differences along the way and we've outlined the differences as much as possible - good pubs, restaurants and history on the Lower Shannon, good activities on the Upper Shannon and a bit of both on Lough Erne. Click on the images below for more information on a specific waterway.

The Lower Shannon and Lough Derg

Shannon Boat Hire Holidays - the Lower Shannon

The lower Shannon and Lough Derg have some of the best historical sites and pubs/restaurants on the Shannon River. Lough Derg is probably the most pictuesque location for boating holidays on the Shannon with hills surrounding the lake and some very interesting islands, the most famous of which is Holy Island, the site of a monsatery founded by St. Colum around 520 AD. There's also the ancient monastic settlement and Clonmacnoise, worth a visit. Both of these islands are accessible on your hire boat.

The Upper Shannon

Shannon Boat Hire Holidays - the Upper Shannon

The Upper Shannon has some of the best activities for boat hire holidays on the Shannon, and some great pubs/restaurants. Lough Key Forest Park is worth a visit with some great family-based activities, and there's plenty of mooring for hire boats around the park. Shannon River Adventure on Kilglass Lake near Rooskey will keep you busy for the day - you'll sleep well afterwards - you can moor your hire boat at Rooskey and they'll come and collect you. There are cosy pubs all along the upper Shannon.

The Erne Waterway/Lough Erne

Shannon Boat Hire Holidays - he Erne Waterway/Lough Erne

The Shannon-Erne waterway is a lovely, tranquil waterway with 5 small towns along it's length, each with pubs and restaurants. There are 16 locks to take your hire boat through along the length of the waterway. Lough Erne is very picturesque and has a good mix of activities and historical sites in the islands and harbours around the lake, most of which can be accessed by boat. Enniskillen is a large market town with restaurants aplenty and good places to visit.
