When you hire a boat on the Shannon you can also hire bicycles, or you can take your own. While not strictly necessary as you're always within walking distance of the town or village you moor at you can discover the surrounding areas. These trails provide diverse experiences, from leisurely rides on flat terrains to more extended journeys through Ireland's heartlands, all while showcasing the natural beauty along the River Shannon.
Old Rail Trail
A 43km off-road route connecting Athlone to Mullingar, following a disused railway line. The flat terrain makes it ideal for leisurely rides through the Irish countryside.
Lough Derg Way
Spanning 68km from Limerick City to Dromineer, this trail traces the River Shannon and its canals, passing through picturesque towns like Killaloe and Ballina.
Shannon Estuary Way
A 207km looped route featuring quiet country roads with minimal traffic, perfect for cyclists seeking a tranquil experience.
Portumna Forest Park
Just a 40-minute cycle from the Tipperary village of Terryglass lies Portumna Forest Park. This looped off-road trail starts in the car park and you’ll cycle through the trees and along the lakeshore. There are some lovely views over Lough Derg. This is a single lane track and it does get narrow and twisty in places but it isn’t too technically difficult.
