It depends on how many people will be on board. The largest boats on the Shannon will sleep up to 12 and the smallest will sleep 3-4, and generally speaking larger hire boats are more expensive than smaller boats. Most of the boats have a convertible single bed or double bed in the seating area of the boat and this is indicated by the number of berths, for example a 4+2 berth boats will sleep 4 people in cabins and two in the convertible berth. Some of the larger boats have small pulman berths that are only suitable for children.

It depends on how old and how big the boat is, and on the time of year. All of the cruiser companies offer budget class boats, which are older boats that have been around the block a few times. There are also new boats with better facilities and a bigger price tag, and there are boats in between. Generally you can tell the quality of a boat by comparing the price with other boats in the same class - as a general rule the more expensive the boat, the newer it is. Boats are least expensive in March and October and most expensive in July & August.

All of the boats regardless of age or quality have at least one bathroom and a galley with a cooker and fridge, the larger boats will have two or three bathrooms. Newer models will also have microwave ovens, electric toilets (as opposed to manual pump toilets), an inverter and/or shore power for 220v power on board and more sockets, and bow or stern thrusters. Everything that you need to live on board is provided including bedding, towels, cutlery and crockery.

No licence or experience is necessary to hire a boat on the Shannon and tuition is provided on arrival at the base. Driving a boat can take a little getting used to as they react slower than car. The most common mistake is over-compensation - when you turn the wheel on your car it reacts immediately but boats take a little time to turn. When the boat doesn't react it's a natural tendency to turn the wheel more, but after a little practise you'll be mooring like an expert.
